Pioneering women artists shaping the sound of blues music!
Women, who showcased empowerment, played a crucial role in the early development and popularization of blues music; connecting the blues to the female voice and power. In essence, the history of women in blues is a story of resilience, innovation, and cultural impact. We highlight female blues artists who helped shaped the blues; masterly singers and musicians who don’t always receive the recognition they deserve. These pioneering artists are shaping the sound of blues music, shaping vocal styles, breaking barriers, and paving the way for future generations of female musicians.

BETTE SMITH
The Good, the Bad the Bette her brilliant second album of rocking and rolling Americana, perfectly mixed with blues and soul, in Water Valley, Mississippi. Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn’s, own New York Blues Hall of Fame member. Smith is a wildly emotive singer with a fearless swagger that permeates everything she does and sets it on fire. Bette Smith is a future Hall-of-Fame shoo-in with killer songs and a voice that could launch a thousand hits. Smith’s music influences allows her to stand apart from the many vintage soul replicators around today and gives her much in common with storied performers like Ike & Tina, Betty Wright and Betty Davis.

HABAKA
Awarded the 2019 Black Music Award for "Best Female Jazz Performer," Habaka is a powerhouse vocalist and lyricist. Her remarkable four-octave range spans blues, jazz, and gospel. Habaka's voice is a rich contralto that evokes the soulful depth of Roberta Flack, the smooth allure of Sade, the raw intensity of Etta James, and the explosive power of Mahalia Jackson.

RUTHIE FOSTER
Described by Rolling Stone as “pure magic to watch and hear,” Ruthie Foster earned the 2025 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album for her album Mileage, released on the legendary Sun Records. With soulful melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and unwavering commitment to her craft, Foster continues to carve out a path that is uniquely her own — inspiring audiences and fellow musicians alike. That uniqueness echoes a common theme in Ruthie’s life and career – marching to the beat of her own drum. Turning down a major record deal in pursuit of authenticity, she has stayed true to herself and her vision as an artist. In addition to her fifteen Blues Music Awards, three Austin Music Awards, the Grand Prix du Disque award from the Académie Charles-Cros in France, a Living Blues Critics’ Award for Female Blues Artist of the Year, and the title of an “inspiring American Artist” as a United States Artists 2018 Fellow, her shows have spanned across the U.S., Italy, Germany, Spain, and Cuba.
